Ragazzi “La fantastica signora Maisel“, serie di punta di Prime Video, è una delle serie che più ho apprezzato negli ultimi anni tanto che, devo confessarlo, dopo averne divorato le prime tre stagioni, ed in attesa dell’imminente uscita della quarta, dopo neanche un mese ho già ricominciato da capo e rivisto di nuovo la prima. Certo potete pensare che l’età che avanza mi abbia alquanto rincoglionito, e forse un pò è vero, ma mi piace molto rivedere o rileggere quello che mi entusiasma. E questa serie mi ha appassionato fin dal primo fotogramma.

Siamo a New york nell’anno 1958 e la serie si presenta ed apre come una delle classiche commedie dei film anni ’50-60, quelli con Rock Hudson e Doris Day per intenderci, e per chi li conosce, naturalmente. Musiche bellissime mi catapultano in una scenografia ed ambientazione ricostruita fin nel più piccolo dei particolari, dove costumi e fotografia si esprimono ai massimi livelli, rasentando la perfezione.

La Trama

In breve la trama, cercando di non stalkerare troppo, si basa sulla vita di una giovane donna, Midge,  interpretata da Rachel Brosnahan, appartenente ad una benestante famiglia ebrea, perfettamente a suo agio nella parte di moglie, madre e figlia, che vive in un appartamento lussuoso nell’Upper East Side, con i genitori che abitano nello stesso palazzo.

La vita perfetta di Midge va in frantumi una sera quando, suo marito Joel (Michael Zegen), che ha la passione per la comicità senza tuttavia spiccarne per doti, fa fiasco durante un’esibizione al Gaslight un piccolo locale del village, proprio davanti alla moglie ed ai suoi amici. La delusione porterà Joel a decidere di lasciare un’esterrefatta Midge ed andarsene di casa.

Presa dalla disperazione e scarsamente supportata dai genitori, Midge si ubriaca e, preso un taxi, si ritrova proprio al Gaslight dove,  casualmente, si presenta sul palco e senza volerlo tira fuori un numero da applausi, rivelando un sarcasmo sferzante ed una comicità innata, condita da un linguaggio sboccato tipicamente maschile.

Da qui, nascerà uno strano rapporto con l’improvvisata manager Susie (Alex Borstein) che porterà le due a cercare di destreggiarsi in un mondo, quello della stand-up comedy,  da sempre precluso alle donne.

Il Cast

Rachel Brosnahan è una vera rivelazione, mettendo a punto un personaggio ricco di sfaccettature che passa per tanti differenti livelli di interpretazione, rivelando una verve comica ed una presenza scenica quando sale sul palco, da sembrare nata per fare questo mestiere. Bellissima e perfetta.

Così come è perfettamente centrato il ruolo della burbera, disordinata e del tutto fuori contesto manager, ovvero Alex Borstein, che, al contrario di Rachel, non avendo come prima dote l’avvenenza e, complice il fatto di averle dato un aspetto fortemente mascolino e volutamente fastidioso, inizialmente non entra facilmente in simpatia come personaggio.

Invece proprio questo personaggio, e l’attrice che lo interpreta, si rivela forse addirittura il più centrato, prendendosi la scena con battute e frecciate ispirate e brillanti, e alternandosi nel ruolo di protagonista con la stessa Rachel.

Tra i personaggi di un cast allestito con gusto ed efficacia, spiccano i due scontrosi suoceri interpretati da un duo di eccezione interpretato da Tony Shalhoub,  nel ruolo Abe padre di Midge, e da Kevin Pollak in quello di Moishe (padre di Joel).

Conclusione

La serie è stata pluripremiata facendo incetta dei più importanti premi della critica quali Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Awards ed Emmy Awards, in particolare come miglior serie TV, attrice protagonista (Rachel Brosnahan) e non protagonista (Alex Borstein) e come miglior sceneggiatura e miglior regia (Amy Sherman-Palladino).

Ma quello che mi rimane dopo aver visto le prime tre stagioni sono sicuramente le eccezionali scenografie ed ambientazioni sia in esterna che in studio, le musiche meravigliose e indovinate, una splendida fotografia, ed i costumi di una maniacale perfezione, ma soprattutto, un ritmo incalzante ed i dialoghi talmente serrati e battenti da costringermi a volte a dovermi fermare e tornare indietro per paura di essermi perso qualcosa.

La regista Amy Sherman-Palladino, trasforma a mio modo di vedere, questa serie in quello che appare più come un lunghissimo film che vedi forzatamente a tappe, dove non ci sono interruzioni o episodi che ne spezzano la narrazione. Apre una finestra sulla meravigliosa New York anni ’60, bilanciando egregiamente il mondo di certa elite fondata su abiti alla moda, pettegolezzi ed eventi mondani, tutto condito in salsa jewish ed al femminile,  con quello un pò da bassifondi, e quasi esclusivamente maschile, dei locali notturni della stand-up comedy, sboccato, volgare ed imprevedibile. Tutto questo senza mai scadere nell’ovvio, ma anzi utilizzando i clichè dei film anni 50-60 come spunto per duetti e gags a tratti esilaranti ed irresistibili.

Il resto, credetemi, lo fa il fascino indiscusso della fantastica sig.ra Maisel.

Guys “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, Prime Video’s flagship series, is one of the series that I have appreciated most in recent years so much so that, I must confess, after devouring the first three seasons, and awaiting the imminent release of the fourth, after less than a month I already started over and watched the first one again. Of course you may think that my advancing age has made me somewhat stoned, and perhaps that is a little true, but I really like to review or reread what excites me. And this series fascinated me from the first frame.

We are in New York in the year 1958 and the series presents itself and opens as one of the classic comedies of the 50s-60s films, those with Rock Hudson and Doris Day so to speak, and for those who know them, of course. Beautiful music catapults me into a scenography and setting reconstructed down to the smallest detail, where costumes and photography express themselves at the highest levels, bordering on perfection.

The plot

In short, the plot, trying not to stalk too much, is based on the life of a young woman, Midge, played by Rachel Brosnahan, belonging to a wealthy Jewish family, perfectly at ease in the role of wife, mother and daughter, who lives in a luxurious apartment on the Upper East Side, with his parents living in the same building.

Midge’s perfect life falls apart one evening when her husband Joel (Michael Zegen), who has a passion for comedy without however standing out for his talents, fails during a performance at the Gaslight, a small venue in the village, right in front of the wife and his friends. The disappointment will lead Joel to decide to leave a shocked Midge and leave home.

Taken by desperation and with little support from her parents, Midge gets drunk and, taking a taxi, finds herself right at the Gaslight where, by chance, she shows up on stage and unintentionally pulls out an applause-worthy number, revealing a biting sarcasm and an innate comedy, seasoned with typically male foul language.

From here, a strange relationship will be born with the improvised manager Susie (Alex Borstein) which will lead the two to try to navigate a world, that of stand-up comedy, which has always been closed to women.

The Cast

Rachel Brosnahan is a true revelation, developing a character rich in facets that passes through many different levels of interpretation, revealing a comic verve and a stage presence when she takes the stage, to seem born to do this job. Beautiful and perfect.

Just as the role of the gruff, disorderly and completely out of context manager, Alex Borstein, is perfectly centered, who, unlike Rachel, does not have attractiveness as her first quality and, thanks to the fact of having given her a strongly masculine and deliberately annoying, initially he is not easily liked as a character.

Instead, this character, and the actress who plays it, turns out to be perhaps even the most centered, taking the stage with inspired and brilliant jokes and barbs, and alternating in the role of protagonist with Rachel herself.

Among the characters of a cast put together with taste and effectiveness, the two grumpy in-laws stand out played by an exceptional duo played by Tony Shalhoub, in the role of Abe, Midge’s father, and by Kevin Pollak in that of Moishe (Joel’s father).

Conclusion

The series has been awarded multiple awards, winning the most important critics’ awards such as the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Awards and Emmy Awards, in particular as best TV series, leading actress (Rachel Brosnahan) and supporting actress (Alex Borstein) and as best screenplay and best director (Amy Sherman-Palladino). But what remains with me after having seen the first three seasons are certainly the exceptional scenography and settings both outdoors and in the studio, the wonderful and well-thought music, splendid photography, and the costumes of maniacal perfection, but above all, a fast-paced rhythm. and the dialogues are so tight and fast-paced that I sometimes have to stop and go back for fear of having missed something.

The director Amy Sherman-Palladino, in my opinion, transforms this series into what appears more like a very long film that you forcibly watch in stages, where there are no interruptions or episodes that break the narrative. It opens a window on the wonderful New York of the 60s, excellently balancing the world of a certain elite based on fashionable clothes, gossip and social events, all seasoned in a Jewish and feminine sauce, with the somewhat slum-like and almost exclusively masculine one, of stand-up comedy nightclubs, foul-mouthed, vulgar and unpredictable. All this without ever falling into the obvious, but rather using the clichés of 50s-60s films as a starting point for duets and gags that are at times hilarious and irresistible. The rest, believe me, is done by the undisputed charm of the fantastic Mrs. Maisel.
